Demolition

Rated Operating Capacity
The rated operating capacity of a skid steer loader refers to the load or weight it can carry without reaching a critical point or causing a dangerous load failure. In simpler terms, it is the weight a skid steer can lift. Rated operating capacity is not to be confused with operating weight, which refers to the weight of the equipment itself with a full tank of fuel and an average-sized machine operator inside. Rated operating capacity is critical in determining the right skid steer loader.
Size and Weight
Depending on your core application, the size of skid steer you need will vary. A small, medium, or large skid steer loader frame will meet the needs while maintaining mobility and controllability. Frames are defined by the rated operating capacity and horsepower of the equipment. Frame sizes and weights fall into three general categories:
• Large Frame: 2,200+ lbs - Lowest rated operating capacity, at least 70 hp.
• Medium Frame: 1,750-2,200 lbs - Rated operating capacity, 50-70 hp.
• Small frame: 1,550-1,750 lbs. - rated operating capacity, approximately 50 hp.
There are a variety of sizes available, so you'll want to consider your options carefully when choosing a skid steer for your application. For example, here are some things you can keep in mind:
• Operating capacity: In most cases, the operating capacity of a skid steer increases as weight and size increase. If you need a higher operating capacity, you may need a larger skid steer to ensure it can complete the necessary tasks on your job site.
• Budget: The project budget will significantly impact the size of skid steer you can afford. You can choose the smallest skid steer that still meets your needs so that your project stays within budget. For example, if your project requires a skid steer with a 2,000 lbs operating capacity, you can accomplish the task with a medium frame skid steer and not necessarily a large frame skid steer.
• Jobsite size and layout: The maneuverability of your jobsite will have a significant impact on which skid steer you choose. If your jobsite has tight spaces and many obstructions, a smaller skid steer may be the best choice. However, if your jobsite has wide open spaces and requires a higher working capacity or lifting capability, a larger skid steer will be a better fit for your jobsite.

Lift Type
Skid steers come in two different lift configurations: radial or vertical. This is the last major factor you need to consider when choosing a skid steer for your application, as the two types have different limitations:
Vertical lifts are designed for higher or taller load movements. They also have a higher midpoint lift cycle range, which means they can get into spaces that other equipment can’t.
The radial lift design is more compact and simpler than the vertical one. It has fewer internal moving parts and is ideal for moving loads at or near the ground, such as digging through dirt or shifting terrain.
Note that lift design is not size specific. You’ll find small, medium, and large frame skid steers equipped with each lift type. It’s more important to think of lift capacity as part of how you need to move your load, rather than pegging it to size. Industry experts recommend choosing a radial machine if you perform applications at or below eye level, and vertical if your load movements are primarily above eye level.

• Project Type: Your typical project types and requirements will influence the type of skid steer that is best suited for your job site. For example, construction sites typically require larger skid steers to meet lifting and power requirements, while landscaping companies typically use smaller skid steers because they are more maneuverable than larger machines.
• Work Environment: Another factor to consider is the work environment. If you work on soft or muddy ground or uneven terrain, consider buying a compact track loader. However, you may also choose a wheeled skid steer if working on a hard, flat surface. You should also consider your work environment when choosing a skid steer with different features. For example, if your operators often work in hot temperatures, you may want to choose a skid steer with air conditioning and an enclosed cab.
• Frequency of Use: How often you need a skid steer will help you determine whether you need to buy a new or used skid steer, or go with a rental vehicle. If you use a skid steer for every project you undertake and it is one of the primary machines required to achieve your project goals, then purchasing a new skid steer may be the best investment. If you use a skid steer frequently but it is not always necessary for your projects, you may want to consider purchasing a high-quality used machine. Minimal use may be best suited for leasing.
How to Maintain Skid Steer Loader

Routine Maintenance
Basic daily inspections are essential to keeping tabs on the health of your equipment. Before you start your skid steer, walk around it and inspect it for signs of wear or damage. Walking around is also a great opportunity to assess your surroundings and map out any obstacles in your intended path. Inspect the front of your skid steer, clear any debris from the attachments, and make sure hoses and lines are secure and leak-free. You must also check the arms and pivot points to make sure they are thoroughly lubricated—ideally, you should oil your skid steer after every use. Check the tires and tracks, and make any necessary pressure or tension adjustments. You’ll also want to hop into the cab and quickly check all safety features, including the display panel, horn, seatbelts, and any backup alarms. After that, walk behind the skid steer and open the tailgate to inspect the engine and system components, then check all fluid levels and refill as needed.
Fluid Maintenance
Maintaining the correct fluid levels keeps your skid steer running smoothly. Engine oil, hydraulic oil, and coolant should all be maintained according to the manufacturer’s guidelines to prevent overheating and wear damage.
